On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League, Europe’s elite club football showpiece was concluded and the semifinals were set. And today, the quarterfinals of the UEFA Europa League, Europe’s second tier continental club football showpiece, concluded it’s quarter final stage.

English giants Manchester United and Arsenal both ensured qualification for the semifinals with victories in their respective matches.

The Red Devils held a two goal advantage over Granada from the first leg and they put the tie to bed in the 6th minute, with Edison Cavani’s fantastic volley and a late own goal sealing a spot in the last four for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, who won 4-0 on aggregate. It is the second consecutive season in which United have reached the semifinal stage of Europe’s second tier club football competition – albeit they suffered heartbreak in last year’s edition after they were knocked out by eventual champions Sevilla.

For Arsenal, the Gunners came into the second leg needing to score at least once, having conceded a late goal at home in the reverse fixture. But there was to be no problem on the night as three goals in 24minutes from Nicholas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette and Bukayo Saka sealed a spot in the last four for Mikel Arteta’s side, who also got a late second from Lacazette and ran out 5-1 aggregate winners. They will be hoping to reach their second final in three years, after losing in the 2019 finale to Chelsea.

In other games played, Spanish side Villarreal qualified for the semifinal by beating Dinamo Zagreb 2-1 on the night and 3-1 on aggregate. Meanwhile, AS Roma held Ajax Amsterdam to a 1-1 draw, sealing a 3-2 aggregate win and a spot in the semis.
